Kazz has loved animals since he was a kid, kept many different kinds of pets throughout his life from arthropod and insect to reptile and mammal, and been a vegetarian since 1994. Despite understanding and sympathizing with the more extreme animal rights factions who believe that no animals should be kept in captivity, he also believes that in the modern world, in many cases the benefits of keeping well treated captive bred animals outweigh the drawbacks. Benefits to the animals in sustaining species whose natural habitats are threatened, as well as increased health and life spans for many of the captive individuals, and education, companionship and a greater sense of attachment to and investment in the natural world for keepers.

Abernathy is a beautiful dark, partial pinstripe female crested gecko from Gary Hamann at Ridge and Valley Reptiles. This girl has great genetics! She’s from Yelp X Lava, and this cross carries genes for yellow, orange, pinstripes, tricolors and fantastic harlequins. We hate letting her go, but we’ve had her paired with Abraxas and unfortunately this pairing has not produced the full pinners we hoped for. She may produce brilliantly with another male – the genes are there!
Abbs also likes to be alone on her own turf, so if you take her home, please give her an enclosure to herself! Proven breeder, 37.5 as of 10/1/2012

Li’l Piggins is a female from AC Reptiles that has lavender and orange markings in a very bold pattern when she fires up. Piggs is a great breeder and has played a part in our Pinstripe and Tricolor projects. She’s produced some very dark partial pinstripes (Oingo, Blanket) as well as some lavender flames (Pillow). Since she doesn’t fit exactly into either group, we are letting her go to a new home and would work very well in a harlequin project. Very consistent breeder, but does not play nice with other females. She’ll need her own space during breeding season.

Milkshake is a unique gecko we purchased from Jasper Sailfin Geckos in 2010. He started off as a yellow harlequin with great cream on the dorsal and belly. This past year he’s decided to take after his namesake and look more like a chocolate milkshake! His color ranges from light yellow to a mocha color, depending on his mood. His cream adds to the contrast of this unusual color. Milkshake is also sprinkled with dalmatian spots.
It’s hard to part with Milkshake, but our projects have moved in a different direction and we are growing up another young male with more orange/yellow coloring that we hope to match with a yellow flame/harlequin in the future. Great genes in this guy! Hatched in late 2009, ready to breed.
It’s tempting to call them lizards, but they’re not lizards. Tuatara are an entirely separate order from lizards and snakes, which are their closest living relatives.
These are some very interesting animals for many reasons, such as their longevity*, unusual sensory organs and skeletal features, and have most recently received attention for the way they chew.
Complex chewing behavior is normally only seen among animals with high metabolisms; not reptiles. Tuatara however have unusually low metabolisms even among reptiles, with their average body temperatures being between 41–52°F, as opposed to the average for reptiles of about 68°F, or our own bodies which average 98.6°F, and this makes their chewing very unusual.
In other reptiles, for example snakes, the teeth and jaws are used to help hold prey and pull it into the mouth to be essentially swallowed whole. Tuatara however have two rows of teeth in the upper jaw, and one row in the lower jaw which fits perfectly between the two upper rows. Once a their jaws close, the lower jaw also moves forward and even rotates slightly before the mouth opens again, cutting through food like a steak knife (or three).
Much of this information is not new to science, so although it may prove to some who still believed that there was a very strong link between complex chewing behavior and high metabolism that the link has been overstated, there are two other important things that this story is good for.
1. To introduce more people to the amazing Tuatara and help to make sure this 200 million year old lineage extends far into the future.
2. To highlight the work done at Hull University where researchers constructed the most detailed musculoskeletal 3D model of a skull that has ever been produced. This model has helped to examine the detailed inner workings of Tuatara jaws without harming any of these rare animals in the process. You can see the model and real, living Tuatara in the video below.
* In 2009 a 111 year old male successfully produced offspring, but we don’t know yet how long they can live or at what age they might not be able to reproduce anymore.

Mork is a harlequin crested gecko with partial pinstriping from Fandango X Scaramouche, part of our tricolor project. Mork is a possible male, as there are signs of pores but are difficult to distinguish from scale pigmentation. High-resolution pictures of the pore area available upon request. Mork also displays tri-color markings, so although it is hard to say what his adult coloring and pattern will be, we believe him to be a tricolor crested gecko, the first of our lines we have for sale.
Scaramouche was a very sweet & calm gecko, and this trait has passed down to her offspring. Although we can’t guarantee temperament, Mork (like sibling Momo) has been very easy to handle thus far and perfect for a first-time gecko owner.

Boingo is an unsexed flame from Abraxas X Li’l Piggins in our Dark Pinstripe project that inherited some pinning and has some really nice markings on the side. The legs don’t have enough pattern to make him/her a harlequin, but there is some patterning. This crested gecko baby is unsexed. Hatch date is 4/22/2011 and weight is 3.9 as of 1/28/2012.

Pocket is a pet store gecko, one of the first we bought when we started our hobby. Although she’s a nice gecko with a good personality, she doesn’t fit our current projects. Pocket is a buckskin that sometimes looks olive and even a deep maroon tint on rare occasions. She is 36 grams as of 2/7/2012.
