We do not know enough about the specific plants, effects of soil, and other factors in the Uromastyx native environment to be able to provide proper nutrition with grocery store food alone. However, by providing a wide variety of plants and using the best supplements available, we can make our captive Uromastyx healthy and well-fed.
Calcium, Phosphorus, Vitamin D3 and Supplements
Metabolic bone disease (MBD) is a spectrum of disorders related to a lack or imbalance of calcium. The bioavailability of calcium is determined not just by calcium in the diet but also the interaction of other nutrients – most notably vitamin D3 and phosphorus. When the right balance is not available in the diet, calcium is pulled from bones.
Two dietary supplements are highly recommended for Uromastyx species. First is Repashy Veggie Dust, developed by Allen Repashy as a supplement for all reptiles who take leafy greens. The benefit of this product, besides being a well-balanced supplement, provides kelp (seaweed) as a source of iodine to counteract the goitrogens present in many of the greens used to feed Uromastyx lizards.

The second supplement recommended is Miner-All Indoor formula, which contains a wide range of balanced minerals instead of just calcium and vitamin D3. This should be fed every other or every third feeding. The label may say not to use it for herbivores, but we feel this supplement is appropriate for Uros not receiving natural light. If you are exposing them to direct, unfiltered sunlight then you could weekly for the trace elements. Do not feed Veggie Dust in the same feeding as Miner-All.
